A positive first visit can shape how your child feels about the dentist for years to come. This guide covers when to book, what happens at the appointment, how to look after little teeth at home, and how the Child Dental Benefits Schedule can help with the cost.

When should my child first see a dentist?

We suggest a first visit by about age one, or when the first teeth come through. Early visits are short and gentle. They let your child get used to the chair, the lights and the people before there's ever a problem.

How to prepare your child

  • Talk about the visit calmly and positively. Avoid words like "hurt" or "needle".

  • Read a picture book or watch a short video about going to the dentist.

  • Book a time when your child is usually rested, such as mid-morning.

  • Bring a favourite toy or comforter.

  • Let them see you having a check-up if you can.

What happens at the first appointment?

For young children, the check-up may happen on your lap. We count the teeth, check the gums and how teeth are coming through, and look for early signs of decay. We'll show you how to brush your child's teeth and answer questions about teething, dummies, thumb-sucking and diet.

What is the Child Dental Benefits Schedule?

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is a Medicare program that covers basic dental services for eligible children. Eligibility generally depends on age and whether the family receives certain government payments. Medicare usually lets families know when a child is eligible.

What does the CDBS cover?

It covers basic services such as examinations, X-rays, cleaning, fissure sealants, fillings and extractions, up to a capped benefit over a two-year period. It doesn't cover orthodontics or cosmetic treatment.

Do you bulk bill under the CDBS?

Yes. At Comfort Dental Riverwood we bulk bill eligible children under the CDBS. Bring your child's Medicare card and we'll check their eligibility before treatment.

Looking after little teeth at home

  • Wipe your baby's gums with a soft cloth before teeth appear.

  • Brush twice a day with a soft brush and age-appropriate fluoride toothpaste.

  • Help with brushing until your child is around 8 years old.

  • Avoid putting your baby to bed with a bottle of milk or juice.

  • Keep sweet snacks and drinks to mealtimes, and offer water between meals.

  • Lift the lip once a month to check for white or brown spots.

Why baby teeth matter

Baby teeth hold space for adult teeth, help children chew and speak clearly, and support confidence. Decay in baby teeth can cause pain and infection, and may affect the adult teeth developing underneath.

Summary

Book your child's first visit by about age one, keep it positive, and build simple habits at home. Eligible children can have basic dental care bulk billed under the CDBS.
