Composite bonding is a popular way to repair chips, close small gaps and improve the shape of teeth, often in a single visit. A common question is how long it lasts. This guide explains what to expect, what affects its lifespan and how to look after bonded teeth.

What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding uses a tooth-coloured resin that is shaped onto your tooth, hardened with a special light, then polished. It's often used on the biting edges of front teeth, called edge bonding, to repair chips or even out uneven edges. Usually little or no natural tooth needs to be removed.

How long does composite bonding last?

With good care, composite bonding commonly lasts around five to seven years, and sometimes longer. Over time it may need polishing, repair or replacement as it wears, chips or picks up stain.

Why bonding doesn't last forever

Composite resin is softer than natural enamel and porcelain. It can wear with chewing, chip under heavy force, and slowly absorb stain from food and drinks.

What affects how long bonding lasts?

  • Location: bonding on biting edges takes more force than bonding on the face of a tooth.

  • Your bite: grinding or clenching shortens its life.

  • Habits: biting nails, pens or ice can chip bonding.

  • Diet: coffee, tea, red wine and curries can stain it.

  • Oral hygiene and regular maintenance.

How to look after composite bonding

  • Brush twice a day with a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste.

  • Avoid biting directly into very hard foods with bonded front teeth.

  • Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth.

  • Rinse with water after coffee, tea or red wine.

  • Keep up regular check-ups so we can polish and maintain the bonding.

Can composite bonding be whitened?

No. Whitening gels don't change the colour of composite resin. If you'd like whiter teeth, it's best to whiten first, then match the bonding to your new shade.

Composite bonding vs veneers

Bonding is usually quicker and less costly, and it's easier to repair. Porcelain veneers are more resistant to staining and wear and tend to last longer, but they usually involve removing some enamel. We'll talk through which suits your goals.

Are there risks?

Bonding can chip or stain over time, and the edges may need occasional repair. It isn't suitable for everyone, for example where teeth have large areas of decay. We'll check your teeth first and explain your options.

Summary

Composite bonding is a conservative, versatile treatment that can last several years with good care and regular maintenance. Your bite, habits and diet all affect how long it lasts.
